Communication is a skill you can practise. In Canada’s diverse communities, asking questions and checking assumptions can be especially useful. Active listening means more than waiting quietly: give your attention, ask a genuine question and check that you understood the speaker’s meaning.
Assertiveness helps you express needs without dismissing someone else’s. Tone, posture and gestures also influence the conversation, although their meaning depends on context. Working on these skills together can make it easier to discuss difficult topics and understand one another.
You do not have to be outgoing to communicate well. Curiosity, attention and a willingness to practise matter more than a particular personality. Start with a small change that feels manageable.
Listen for the concerns behind a message and ask questions rather than assuming you know how someone feels.
Practise sharing an opinion, declining a request and explaining a boundary with clear, respectful language.
Try to understand another person’s perspective while recognising that your experiences may differ. Trust grows through care and consistency.
